- Get Organized
- Clean out the clutter and items that you don’t use. As a general rule, if you haven’t used something 12 months you might want to consider getting rid of it. A garage sale or charity is a great way of doing this and you can trash the rest.
- Plan and organize packing supplies or arrange for a packer/ mover if you plan to outsource it. Plan on carrying all valuable jewelry with you.
- Organize and book a moving van and some friends if you plan to do the move yourself. If you’re moving out of state look into getting your car shipped as well as your pet’s transport arrangements
- Think about the plan of your new home and how you plan to layout the furniture in those rooms. Make sure you measure the space for appliances and furniture
- Call all your service providers and let them know when to terminate the service in your old home and when to establish service in your new home.
- Contact the post office and file a Change of Address form with them. Be sure to notify all the utility companies, credit card companies, banks, other creditors and family and friends about your new address
- Mark the boxes with fragile stickers as needed. It’s a great idea to sketch out a floor plan of the new home and place color coded stickers on boxes so that the movers know which room the boxes and furniture go to
- On the day before the move, empty and defrost the refrigerator
- Keep all moving receipts in a safe place since many moving expenses might be tax deductible. Check with your accountant for those
